Signal Mountain's Late-Summer Calendar Just Got a New Landlord

Walk past the old stone schoolhouse on Kentucky Avenue any evening this month and you will see the same porch light, the same pottery students filing out, the same dog walkers cutting through the lawn. What you will not see is the change that happened at midnight on January 1, 2026, when the Town of Signal Mountain quietly took the keys.

That handoff at the Mountain Arts Community Center is the single most important thing on the mountain's community calendar this year, and the fall lineup is where residents get to see what it actually means.

What Changed at the MACC on January 1

For years the MACC operated under a lease and memorandum of understanding with the Signal Mountain Elementary Preservation Fund, the nonprofit that saved the 1926 schoolhouse and rebuilt it into an arts venue. That arrangement ended by mutual agreement at the start of the year. The town assumed direct operational responsibility for programming and preservation, and the council adopted a proclamation honoring Dick and Cheryl Graham, who served as co-directors from July 2021 through December 2025. The theater inside the building was renamed The Ridge Theater in their honor, a name Mr. Graham suggested himself.

To run the expanded portfolio, the town created a new Community Development director role and hired Chelsea Ryden, a Signal Mountain resident, to oversee the MACC alongside communications, economic development, and town branding. Town Manager Matthew Justice framed the transition as building on the arts foundation while widening the programming to reach more residents.

Here is the practical read for anyone who has walked into the MACC for a pottery class, a Studio 9 dance recital, or the tree lighting: the volunteer heart of the place did not disappear. The org chart above it did. Decisions about which concerts get booked, which classes run in the summer, and how the grounds are maintained now flow through a town department rather than a nonprofit board. That is the context for every event you see on the fall calendar.

The Fall Calendar Is the First Test

Watch what fills The Ridge Theater and the surrounding grounds between now and Christmas. This is the first full season programmed under town oversight, and the mix leans heavily on the traditions that already worked, with a few new additions signaling where the expansion might go.

The 127 Yard Sale slot is worth a note if you have not participated before. Signal Mountain sits on the northern approach to the 127 Corridor Sale, the multi-state event that runs from Michigan down through Alabama every August. Anchoring a local sale day at the MACC lawn puts the town on the map for cross-country shoppers who would otherwise blow past on the highway. If you are cleaning out a garage this summer, that Thursday is the one to plan around.

Rock the Ridge on September 12 is the fall's marquee community festival at 2815 Anderson Pike. Christkindlmarkt returns to the MACC in mid-November as the seasonal opener before the town Christmas tree lighting later in December.

Beyond the MACC: The Rest of the Rhythm

The MACC is one node in a broader circuit that also runs through McCoy Farm & Gardens on Taft Highway. The 15-acre property with the historic Bachman McCoy House keeps its grounds open to the public from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily, and hosts a rolling calendar of concerts, bird walks, weed wrangles, and seasonal picnics across the pavilion, boxwood gardens, horseshoe gardens, apple orchard, and front lawn. If you have not walked the McCoy loop at dusk in September, put it on the list. The oak canopy over the Bachman house is at its best when the light drops.

• Pruett's Market functions as grocery store, cafe, and porch. The hot bar rotates a seasonal menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, brick-oven pizzas and sandwiches start at 11 a.m., and the patio is the place you accidentally run into three neighbors on your way in for milk. Local musicians play regularly, and college football is on the screens Saturdays through the fall.
• Civil Provisions and Bar at 720 Mississippi Avenue holds down happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., with $5 draft beer, $8 margaritas and old fashioneds, $2 off wine by the glass, $5 off pizza, and a $13 Civil Burger and fries. Sunday brunch runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If the MACC calendar is the town's public face, Civil is the standing weeknight reservation.
• The Bread Basket has been baking on the mountain since 1989 and moved to its current spot near the Fairmount Apple Orchard in 1993. The sweet southern sourdough, still made from the original starter Marie Hyde got from a neighbor in the 1980s, is the housewarming gift Signal Mountain gives its new arrivals. Featured on Food Network and in Southern Living, but that is not why residents keep the standing order.

Fortune House on Taft has been the family Chinese takeout for close to two decades. The Pizza Place has been slinging the bacon double cheeseburger pizza and the shrimp Rockefeller since 1989. El Metate is usually the busiest room in town on a Friday night. None of these are new. That is the point.

A Working Theory About What This Season Reveals

Here is the read from the sidelines. When a volunteer nonprofit hands its programming over to a municipal department, one of two things usually happens. The calendar contracts to the safe, low-risk recurring events that require the least coordination, or it expands as the new operator uses paid staff and a bigger budget to try things the volunteers could not sustain.

The 2026 fall lineup is a hybrid. The recurring anchors are all there: the 127 Yard Sale, Christkindlmarkt, the tree lighting, the class calendar. The additions, including the Flying Raptor Event with HappiNest and Rock the Ridge, suggest the town is testing whether outside partners and larger festival formats can pull in residents from Walden and the surrounding pockets who do not typically drive to the MACC on a random Tuesday.

Watch attendance at the October and November events. If the parking lot is full for the raptor demo and the Christkindlmarkt crowds spill out onto Kentucky Avenue, expect a more ambitious 2027 calendar. If turnout mirrors past years, the department will settle into a caretaker rhythm and the real experimentation will happen elsewhere, probably at McCoy or at private venues along Taft.
